The Society of the Faith wishes to ensure that the legacy of work by Faith Craft* is, as much as possible, preserved. This is our policy for assessing applications for a grant to conserve Faith Craft items, along with the application form.

Policy

  1. A Faith Craft Conservation grant is for the restoration or repair of items produced by Faith Craft. Faith Craft produced much work from the 1920’s to the early 1970’s. Some of the artists also worked for other firms or independently. Grants are given for work produced by Faith Craft ONLY. Applicants will be asked how they know the work was produced by Faith Craft.
  2. In all cases items need to be in use, or be intended to be put into use, in a cathedral, church or chapel, or placed on public display if the item, even when conserved, will be too fragile for general use.
  3. Work must usually be undertaken by a trained conservator, who has provided an assessment of the item, the work required and the costs. If, exceptionally, the work is not to be undertaken by a trained conservator, the Trustees of the Society must be satisfied the work will be done to a suitably high standard.
  4. Applicants will be expected to have tried to raise funds from other sources, including from their own resources. Evidence of this will be required. The Trustees of the Society will also ask for evidence of the current financial position of the organisation making the application.
  5. If the planned work is, or could be, covered by the Faculty Jurisdiction, please provide details of consultations etc.
  6. The sum available each calendar year for all Faith Craft grants is £10,000.
  7. Grants will be paid once evidence of the work being completed has been provided, along with invoices from the conservator. In exceptional cases, part payment of the grant could be made once work is underway, if otherwise the work could not proceed.
  8. The governing body of the Society, the Court of Fellows, will make decisions on all applications. The Court meets four times a year, usually in February, June, September and November. Dates are shown on our website. Applications and any supporting evidence must be received by one calendar month before the date of the Court meeting at which it will be considered.
  9. Within these limits the Trustees of the Society have absolute discretion as whether to award a grant. If an application is declined, written reasons will be given.

This grant policy was adopted by the Court of Fellows of the Society of the Faith on 15 September 2026.

* There never seems to have been a set way of referring to the organisation as contemporary publications by the Society refer to Faith Craft, Faith Crafts, Faith Craft-Works, Faith CraftWorks, FaithCraft and Faith Craft Studios. The Society prefers to use ‘Faith Craft’.
